The Phoenix Arts Centre: Newarke Street, Leicester

Formerly known as the Phoenix Theatre, Orton left Islington on August 1st 1967 to see a performance of ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ here. It was the last time he would visit Leicester – eight days later he was dead, murdered by Kenneth Halliwell.

‘Said goodbye to Kenneth this morning. He seemed odd. On the spur of the moment i asked if he wanted to come home to Leicester with me. He looked surprised and said, ‘No’.  Joe Orton, Diary, August 1st 1967.
